Xymphonia Album Review

“Okay, what do we know about Coevality? Not much really. According to the Bandcamp page, this Los Angeles trio spent a decade composing and recording "Multiple Personalities," with one possible explanation for the title being that there have been multiple lineup changes during that time. However, this long conception time has amply paid off, because the seven - clocking between five and ten minutes - tracks have been recorded with a sense of detail and an enormous assertiveness. The most striking instrument is Derrick Elliott's fretless bass placed in the mix, which immediately brings to mind the old days of Brand X. But immediately after that, the Neil Peart-like drumming of Andy Prado and the rich palette of guitarist Jon Reicher also fall. The latter has the talent to express himself with his instrument both subtly plucking and virtuoso soloing and serving both heavy and funky. Both Reicher and Elliott play trumpet and cello in addition to their main instruments. They also add symphonic layers to their music through Midi programming. As a result, the compositions are rich in timbre and dynamic variety. So what do we know about Coevality? That it produced an excellent progressive jazz rock record. Not convinced yet? Then listen to the two tracks we've selected, "Cryptic Creek" and "Oceania", otherwise we'll be back with more good stuff in the near future.”
